How Long Does BIAB Last on Natural Nails?

By Katie Budding · 22 April 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer: two to three weeks for most people. Some clients get a solid four, a few get closer to ten days. Here's what actually makes the difference.

Your natural nail growth

Most people's nails grow roughly 3mm a month. Around week two, you'll start to see a small strip of natural nail at the cuticle. That's not BIAB failing — that's just your nails growing, same as they always do. By the end of week three, most sets are ready for an infill (where I add a fresh layer over the grown-out gap and buff the whole thing smooth).

What you do with your hands

Hands down the biggest factor. If you're:

  • washing up without gloves
  • gardening, cleaning, or working with your hands
  • picking at the edges (please don't)
  • using your nails as tools (opening tins, picking off stickers)

...BIAB will lift sooner. It's still tougher than gel polish on its own, but it's not indestructible. A pair of washing-up gloves genuinely adds about a week.

How well your nails were prepped

This is on me, not you. Proper prep — pushing back and tidying the cuticle, buffing the nail plate, dehydrating, and applying the primer in a thin, even layer — is the difference between a BIAB set that lifts at day seven and one that holds beautifully for three weeks. This is why I don't rush prep. At Buds Nails I budget plenty of time for it in every appointment.

Cuticle oil — yes, really

A tiny drop of cuticle oil, twice a day, will add a week to how your BIAB looks. It keeps the nail flexible, stops the gel from getting brittle, and stops lifting at the edges. It's the single best thing you can do between appointments. I can recommend a good one at your next visit.

What does "lasting" actually mean?

There's a difference between "BIAB still on your nail" (which can be 4+ weeks, honestly) and "BIAB still looking neat and un-grown-out" (which is about 2–3). I usually recommend booking your next appointment around week three — you'll get an infill rather than a full redo, which is quicker, cheaper, and kinder to your natural nail.

So… book your infill around week 3

If you're in the Newton Longville / Milton Keynes area and you'd like to get into a rhythm with your nails, fill in the booking form or DM me on Instagram. BIAB infills at Buds Nails are £30, same as a fresh BIAB and gel polish manicure.
